There are four very different and distinct tabby patterns; Mackerel, Classic, Spotted, and
Ticked.  People are often confused about the differences in the Tabby patterns.  Since
most of the confusion from potential “kitten parents” involves the Mackerel and Classic
tabbies, I will explain the differences between those two patterns.

Mackerel tabby is by far the most common and genetically dominate tabby pattern.  It is
often referred to striped, fishbone or wild tabby pattern.  The mackerel tabby pattern has
vertical, stripes on the side of the body. The stripes are narrow, and may be continuous or
broken into bars and spots on the flanks and stomach.
Classic Tabby body markings have a marbled pattern with wide highly contrasted swirls
on the body and a bulls-eye pattern on the flanks.  The legs and tail are more heavily
barred than the Mackerel tabby.  Classic tabbies are often referred to as blotched or
swirled tabbies.
